First Positive case of CORONAVIRUS in West Bengal …

Kolkata,17th March : A young boy, 18years old, who recently returned from England on last Saturday, tested positive of novel coronavirus.

The West Bengal Health Department on Tuesday evening confirmed the first positive COVID-19 case in Kolkata. The young boy had travelled from UK to Kolkata. On Tuesday morning he was admitted at Beliaghata ID and BG Hospital and his swab sample was sent for COVID-19 test to National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED). In the evening the test result came and the 18years old boy has tested positive”, said the senior state government official.

Soon after the result the youth has been shifted to the isolation ward and doctors are continuously monitoring his condition.

The young went to UK to pursue higher studies and returned home recently. He was apparently asymptomatic and was not detected during screening at the Kolkata Airport. It was only after his friend told him over phone that with whom he attended the party last time had tested positive for COVID-19. He was then sent to the hospital for further examination.

The affected male is the son of bureaucrat, Arunima De, Joint Secretary, State Home Department. His mother had attended office at Nabanna, the state secretary till March 16. The office houses the Chief Minister’s Office, other ministries and departments.

His parents and driver has been sent to the newly opened Special Quarantine Unit at Rajarhat, where they have been quarantined.

“There is mild infection but he is under control. All his parameters are stable. However, we are taking no chance. He will be kept isolated and his samples will be sent for test again.” said the government official.

Late in the evening, the state health department confirmed the case.

“As on today total 74,978 travellers/persons have been screened at Kolkata and Bagdogra Airports and 28,03,62 persons have been screened at seven Land Border Check Points along Nepal and Bangladesh. Also, 3,989 crew members of ships have been screened in three Ports. Till date, 12,244 travellers from COVID-19 affected countries have been identified and placed under surveillance,” an official release from West Bengal`s health department said.

“For 248 of them, the surveillance period has been over. Eighteen are admitted in isolation facility on the date. Rest 11,978 are under home surveillance. Till date, 70 samples have been sent to National Institute of Virology (NIV) Pune, ICMR-NICED, Kolkata and IPGMER, Kolkata for the test of COVID-19. Results of 69 samples are negative. One sample has come positive,” it said.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in India is 137 so far.
