Kolkata: One of the most important creations of Nature is humankind. Nature further gave humankind the gift to produce among themselves and thus, it created Women. However, even after being the finest gift of Nature, women struggled constantly for their existence. The society, being patriarchal made it very difficult for women to live a life that they could call their own; one in which they have their own say and can decide for themselves. However, over the course of time, many strong women emerged who raised their voice against patriarchy and thus made a mark in history. In order to celebrate such women, International Women’s Day is celebrated every year on March 8. It is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality. International Women’s Day (IWD) has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people. Today, IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. IWD is not country, group or organization specific.
The earliest Women’s Day observance, called “National Woman’s Day,”was held on February 28, 1909, in New York City, organized by the Socialist Party of America at the suggestion of activist Theresa Malkiel. There have been claims that the day was commemorating a protest by women garment workers in New York on March 8, 1857, but researchers have described this as a myth.
