VC had attested the ‘forged’ documents of a mathematics lecturer, who taught post-graduate students for seven years without the required documents for that position.
Kolkata: Ex Vise Chancellor Dilip Sinha, registrar Dilip Mukherjee and a mathematics teacher Mukti Deb of Visva Bharti University Shantiniketan Bolpur have been charged for forgery and conspiracy after they were found guilty in a scam of forged mark sheet dating back to 1997.
Mukti Deb had been appointed as the mathematics lecturer in 1997 based on fake certificates which she submitted that time attested by the then VC Dilip Sinha. Deb continued teaching, post-graduate students for seven years without the required qualification for that post. The scam came up in light in 2004.
The University officials understood something suspicious after Mukti Deb submitted her College ( Graduate and Post Graduate) certificates photo copy and said the originals certificates had gone missing from her residence.
On verifying with the two universities, ( Calcutta University and Jadavpur University ) the officials get to know that she had never been to these universities. Mukti deb was then suspended in April 2004.
The case was handed over to CID for further investigation.
In March 2005, CID submitted the charge sheet against the three at Bolpur court. After 15 years of trial, they were found guilty. Dilip Sinha has been booked under IPC Sections 466 (forgery of record of court or of public register), 467 (forgery of valuable security, will), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 469 (forgery for purpose of harming reputation), 471 (using as genuine a forged document) and 474 (possession of document knowing it to be forged and intending to use as genuine).
