P CHIDAMBARAM : Arrested for INX MEDIA CASE

DELHI :

Former Home minister of India, Finance minister and congress leader P Chidambaram was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation, Wednesday late evening after high drama outside his South Delhi home, Jor Bagh residence. The CBI officers ascend through the walls and roofs to gain access inside the premises of Chidambaram’s residence.

Chidambaram is arrested for the INX Media case, in which he has been accused for malpractice, money laundering and misuing the post of finance minister. He is taken to the CBI headquarters for interrogation purpose. He will be produced before a special CBI court (Rouse Avenue) on Thursday, where the agency will seek his remand.

Chidambaram earlier appeared in a press conference at the Congress Headquarters in New Delhi after the Supreme Court refused to hear his anticipatory bail plea on Wednesday.

Soon after P Chidambaram appeared at the Congress Headquarters, a CBI team followed him there only to find that he had already left for home. The CBI team followed him from the Congress Headquarters to his Jor Bagh residence, and knocked at the main gate for few minutes before scaling the boundary wall or roof to enter the premises. In the meanwhile more CBI officers as well as a team of Enforcement Directorate and Delhi police also arrived.

After he was arrested by the CBI  he was taken to Ram Manohar Lahiri hospital for medical check-up. He has been kept in the suit No. 5 of the CBI Guest House on the ground floor of the agency headquarters.

After facing the arrest Chidambaram put up a strong defence of himself and his family members, saying that, none of them have been accused of any offense by the probe agencies.
“I am aghast that I was accused of hiding from the law… I was pursuing the law,” he said rejecting the allegations that he was avoiding the investigation agencies. He explained that he was working with his lawyers last night, preparing his papers or his bail application.

The INX Media case is the same scam in which his son Karti was in jail for 23 days before being granted bail by the Delhi High Court. The scam drew attention as other high profile persons are accused in the same case and are jailed – media entrepreneur Peter Mukerjea and his wife Indrani, former Director of INX Media (P) Ltd.
